SAILING.

OPENING OF THE SEASON

TO-MORROW

Tho opening; of the1 season of this popular sport will take place to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock sharp. Mr. Mackay (the commodore) will declare tho season open, from the wharf. Then ho will board the Clipper 11., and lead tho boats up and down the river. At 2.30 p.m. the i-ace-for Mr. J. B. Murray's trophy, which is a very handsome barometer, will be started. - '"' It is to be hoped that members of - tho two Boating Clubs and all owners of launches and craft, sailing or other-;. wise, who are able to put in an ap^ paarance, will do so. Mr. Nixon's new launch has been engaged for the afternoon, and those wishing to have a near view of the raco can do so by paying the small sum of Is. Only a limited number of tickets are for sale, and are procurable from tho secretary and committee. Wo hope that the weather will be favourable, and judging by the enthusiasm shown by the various .owners in making their boats look pretty, the race promise to be a great success. All the boats, with but one exception, are looking in .the "pink of condition," and should present a very pretty sight. It only remains for the public to patronise the raps and the success.of the function is assured. ;

We believe that several' members of tho Wanganui Swimming Club have notified their intention of-giving an ex-; hibition of swimming and diving in front of the ;'-wharf. Arrangements havo beei} made with the Harbour -Board; for the use of a punt to be moored in a suitable place for the swimmers. . ' .. . "'■■-•-.- -.ii-. ".Ki ..•.■•.:;.■ ..•'.■..'/..
