The second of a series of prosecutions for trespassing in Kauri forests and bleeding trees for gum took place at Rawene, Hckranga, before Mr R. Stone Morenos, S.M. George Oswald Dysart was charged on several information laid by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, for trespassing in the Waraiw&ra Estate forest on dates between the 19th and 25th April, 1905. The defendant pleaded guilty to all the charges. • Mt S. Mays prosecuted for the Crown. He pointed out tfhe great extent of bleeding operations carried on by Dyssart. It appeared from the report of 6he Crown -Forest Ranger that 11,000 fcree^ had been bled by those engaged in this eo-oalled industry—'most of them by defendant. It further appears that the effect of excessive bleeding was to oause the trees to wither and die.
The magistrate, after hearing the evidence and argument, found the accused guilty on the first offence.. He would fine him £50, on the second £30, and on the remaining £10 each, or £130 in all, with costs amounting to £16 7s 6d.
