RANGITIKEI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MARTON, Saturday. The monthly meeting of the above Council was held to-day. Present: Crs. JT. W. Marshall (chairman), Beckett, Simpson, Aldworth, Evan McGregor, Alex. McGregor, Smith, and Fraser. Inward correspondence was read and dealt, with as follows:— The Chairman Jjaid on the table the ■&ext of the judgment of the Court of .Appear re case as to rating. Letter from H. Hulberb, j again applying to have old building removed arom road to Utiku.—lnquiries to be nuada from the Commissioner of Crown Xands, in whom roads in Potaka township are vested. Letter from D. C. Tennent, asking ihat a deputation be allowed to wait on the Council re roads on the Brandon Hall estate. Mr. Smith stated *hat it was desired that the Council should undertake the work, and that ihey would guarantee the cost to the <CouncH, and that a loan might be subsequently raised for the work. * From Cottrell and Humphries, asking that the Council acknowledge tenancy at peppercorn rental of cottage occupied by roadman and owned by CJaptain Birch Resolved, on the mo- . *ion of the chairman, seconded by Cr. _A. McGregor, that a letter be forwarded as requested by applicants. " From Rev. P. W. Clarkson, re Kitson lamps for Taihape.—Resolved, on •the motion of Cr. Smith, seconded by Or. Aldworth, that permission be given ■to erect the lamps as requested. From E. Gorton, asking that public a-oad to Greatford be re-metalled.— "Work to be authorised. Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Aldworth, that «Crs. Beckett and Smith be authorised ■±o sign the rate books for this year. Mr. Mair's report for past month ■was read and dealt with. Resolved, "that the matter of disposal of stonecrusher was left in Mr. Mair's hands. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Smith, seconded by Cr. Fraser, that ihe Inspector be instructed to arrange -with Messrs. The Chairman reported re Mr. P. C. ZNeill's claim for survey of Ohaumoko Toad, that no definite evidence that the Council has agreed to pay the cost of survey of the road.—No action ' to be taken. Mr. C. Doherty's tender was accepted for contract No- 200. Resolved, on the motion of the Chairunan, seconded by Cr. McGregor, that Mr. R-. ALdworth's account of £10 for Mf an acre of land for gravel pit and JE9 7s. 6d. for land taken for deviation of Rata-Silverhope roads be passed for payment. Messrs. Fitzpatrick, O'Leary, Can--ton, Hurley, and Duncan waited on the 'Council on behalf of the settlers of No. 2 Block, Pohonui, to protest against sthe separate rate recently. levied over district to cover cost of erection of Eilbum's bridge.—The Council decided that Uiey must pay the rate this ajyear, but ah^effort would be made to I je-divide the' area next year^and not irclude them in this special.rating district. This was seconded by Cr. Beckett, who also expressed his deep .regret at his retirement form office. The Chairman also made a few appropriate remarks on the Council staif as a whole for the very satisfactory manJier in which the work was so ably conducted. Mr. Richardson, Inspectors JMair and Thorns replied, thanking the Chairman and Council for their very Jkind expression of opinion.
