CHRISTCHURCH, October 28. At Rangiora, just before eight o'clock this morniing, an elderly man named Charles Bonham, a labourer, was found lying in Ashley Street apparently in a fit. He was tiakon into a house near by and a doctor who was called in found that he was suffering from strychnine poisoning. He was subsequently conveyed to the police station, where two doctors attended him. At three o'clock he was still alive, but in a critical condition. The man purchased the strychnine in a local chemist's shop about a week ago for the purpose, he said, of poisoning rats. He is a. widower, his wife having died recently. WELLINGTON, October 29. A boating accident occurred at Island Bay to-day, a man named McDonald being drowned. No details are yet available.

ANOTHER ACCIDENT

CHRISTCHURCH, October 29. A young man named Peter Bryson, a resident of Wright's Road, Hiilmorton, near the Sunnyside Mental Hospital, was accidentally shot in the body by a pea rifle this morning. He was in the act of washing a dog in his own garden when a bullet firbm a pea- rifle fired by some hoys in a neighbouring garden struck him. and penetrated the anight lung. He was taken to the hospital immediately and attended to there.
