"THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE."

To the Editor.

Sir,—Will you kindly give me space to 'express my thanks <to the No-license Party in Wanganui for the printed statement on. "Ashburton Answers," circulated with the "Chronicle" of the 25th instant. It came in here most opportunely, as we had Mr. Woolley addressing a meeting in th© Town Hall that evening. The whole day had been a steady downpour of rain, and in the evening it increased until it must have»been, I suppose, very much as in the days of Noah. We were, however, delighted to find that the hall was well filled, some having come even from Rongotaa, 12 miles away. I found at the door an agent of the liquor "trade handing these misleading statements on "Ashburton Answers" to the people as they entered the hall. One of these statements gives No. 177 in the "Ashburton Answers" as in favour of NoLicense, and No. 281 as against it, and the reader is left to infer that opinion in Ashburton seams about equally divided on the question, and the more thoughtless reader would jump to the conclusion that while 177 were in favour of No-license there were 281 against it. I read this statement to the meeting, and then read the real facts as given in the above paper, and appealed to the audience's sense of fair play. Thia move has not helped the liquor trade here. Had the evening been, fair, I believe there would have been scarcely standing room for the numbers present, and if you have fair weather in Wanganui when Mr. Woolley is with you, your Opera House will-require all its accommodation. -B.ut this wily, and urscrupulous foe must be closely watch-ed.—^-1 am, etc., JAMES DOULL. Bulls, October: 2J.
