WELLINGTON R.C. SPRING MEETING.

(BY (iMULTIFafi,M.") This meeting, which eventuates today and on Saturday at the Hutt racecourse, will be Jbhe last'held by the W.R.O. at vhis historio deciding ground, and with this in view the club have made special arrangements for the success of the farewell gathering, special invitations having been issued and accepted by many prominent patrons and authorities of the sport of Kings aM over the colonies. Besides this, the club proposes to run an excursion to the new course at Trentham, so that its guests may see and judge of the merits of its future convincing ground. Excellent acceptances have been re-1 ceived for the meeting, which only iweds fine weather to make it a record socoes3 for the course. Proceedings will commence with the October Hack Hurdles. Black Squall, South Star, and the Taxpayer should fight out the finish, and the one to prevail may be TAXPAYER. Marguerite, Solution, Kudu, and Martello appear to me to be most worthy of support in the Shorts Handicap, and I cannot see anything I prefer to MARGUERITE. The Wellington Handicap will sec some of our best handicap horses out, and with Achilles, Mahutonga, Signalman, Black Reynard, Auratus, Shrapnel Shell, Lyrist, and Flamen fighting for supremacy, a brilliant finish should result: Achilles has not raced for a long time, and with 9.10 to carry, I hesitate to recommend him. Those who saw Mahutonga race at Hawke's Bay aver that he is very backward, and he will perhaps find the contract beyond 'him. Signalman is reported to be in rare fettle, but some of those below him in the handicap may be more leniently treated. Black Reynard has always given me the impression that ho would stay a distance, and will probably be hard to beat. The pick of the handicap to my way of thinking is Auratus, who has a partiality for the Hutt course, and he has proved his /ability to stay. Shrapnel Shell, in the soft going, must be hard to beat, and of the light weights, St. Joe and Blythemaid have good chances. The winner should bo included in Black Reynard, Signalman, Auratus, and BlythemaM, and of these I have a preference for AURATUS.

Four of the seven engaged in thd Flying Handicap are engaged earlier "in the day in the Shorts, and in consequence the field for this race must be materially reduced. Exmoor and Sir Tristram may fight out the issue, and the one to prevail may be EXMOOR. Scrap Iron Jack, Gazeley, Perdita, Devonia., and Marseillaise may be tho best of those engaged in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap. Scrap Iron Jack, Perdita, and Marseillaise should be handy nearing the post, and the fiust to pass may be PERDITA. The Wellesley Stakes may be won y ZIMMERMAN. The prospects of Noneen, Kudu, and Hinerewa read best in the Wainui Handicap, and as between the chances of Kudu and Hinerewa, I prefer those HINEREWA. In the Spring Handicap, Petticoat, Gawain, Truce, and Devonia read well, and the winner may turn up in PETTICOAT.

General Symons has broken down, and will not be at the Wellington

meeting. Rose Madder is not going, and Gold Crown will not be a starterin the big race Captain Shannon is not to make the trip from Napier, l.oftus, Moscow, Uenuku, Little Mary, and Mr. Friedlander's filly will not goto the post for the Wellesley Stakes. Gold Crown was scratched for the Wellington Handicap at 5.15 p.m. on Wednesday. A further payment for the N.Z. Cup and acceptances for the Stewards' Handicap are due to-night.
