A statement from No. 10 Downing Street reads;— “The following additional appointments, which have been made as a result of conversations between the President of the United States and the Prime Minister, are announced on behalf of the British Government:— “General Sir Bernard Paget to be Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East, under the supreme Allied commander in the Mediterranean theatre. “Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Tedder to be Deputy Supreme Commander under General Eisenhower.” General Eisenhower’s appointment is featured in the first German newspapers appearing after Christmas. The papers point out that the Allies now apparently mean business as far as the second front is concerned.
