USE OF HOSES

APPEAL FOR COOPERATION TO AVOID RESTRICTIONS. HELP OF HOUSEHOLDERS WANTED. “Hosing restrictions have not yet been imposed, and it depends entirely upon the co-operation of householders as to whether a fair measure of garden watering is to continue or whether hosing restrictions with the enforcement of limited days and hours will be imposed,” stated the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, today. “Householders who continue to hose 1 extravagantly, those - leaving hoses playing in the hot sunshine, those endeavouring to maintain green lawns, and those leaving their hose unattended whilst they go out for the evening, or sometimes to allow the water to flow all night, arc simply asked for the imposition of hosing restrictions,” said Mr Jordan. “Used within reasonable limits there is enough water for necessary hosing without the need for curbing it to zoned districts, permitted days and hours. There is'not enough water to be wantonly wasted. Those dwelling on the higher levels are entitled with others to an unrestricted domestic water supply as well as a reasonable hosing supply, but if the intake at the reservoir is insufficient to make up the daily draw-off then only one course is open to the council to restore and to preserve an adequate supply for all, and that is to impose hosing restrictions so that everyone will receive a fair supply. “The council’s officers,” said Mr Jordan, “have full authority to enter upon any land supplied with water at any hour of the day or night to ascertain if any water is wasted or misused, and if it becomes necessary, through the wastefulness of some, to impose hosing restrictions upon all, then those who still persist in taking more than their fair share of water will only have themselves to blame if their names are taken and action follows.”
