WOMEN’S AUXILIARY

ASSISTANCE TO SEAMEN.

SCHOOL MEMBERSHIP OVER 500

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Navy League was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs S. R. Gawith presiding. Others present were: Mesdamcs G. C. Williams, O. A. Bunny, R. C. Drummond, H. Beetham, A. H. Daniell, J. C. Forsyth, W. H. Robinson, D. Buchanan, T. Jordan, P. J. Borthwick, E. G. Norman, S. Fletcher and Misses C. Cameron and J. McLaren. Apologies for absence were received from IVlesdames H. McKenzie Douglas, C. Carm cron, Cook, W. G. Lamb, H. K. McIntosh and C. Deans and Miss B. Vallance. It was reported that the school membership for 1943 numbered 500, with a few small returns to come. It was announced that members of the committee had assisted with the street day collection on December 10, organised by the British Sailors Society in aid of a hostel in Wellington for seamen.

It was decided to send a donation of £lO to the Mission to Seamen, Wellington, towards the purchase of a second projector, which is needed for their picture theatre. It was also decided to forward a Christmas hamper to the Mission and to ask members and friends, through the press, for donations of cakes, biscuits, tinned foods, etc. The committee will be very grateful for gfits which may be left at Mr R. H. Williams’s office, Perry Street, before noon on Monday, December 20. It was decided that no meeting be held in January, but that the wool depot be closed on December 24 and 31, and reopened on January 7. The purchasing committee will buy for the Mission to Seamen as usual. It was reported that during the year 962 garments had been provided for seamen, 594 woollen garments sent to Wellington, 179 supplied to local men, and 191 garments, other than knitted goods, purchased for the Mission to Seamen. Many grateful letters ft havc been received from men who have received clothing and from the missioned the Rev. B. J. Williams. The committee desire to thank all those who by their untiring work or generous donations, have made it possible to give ■this help to the seamen.' In a report from the National Patriotic Board it was stated that 1,000,000 woollen garments were made by the women of New Zeaalnd during the year ‘ended September 30, 1943, for the men of the services, and appreciation of their work was expressed.
