SWIMMING CLUB

SEASON TO OPEN ON MONDAY.

Mr L. J. Fairbrother presided over the annual meeting of the Carterton Swimming Club last evening, there being a good attendance of members. The report and balance sheet submitted by the secretary showing a substantial credit balance, was adopted.

The chairman said that the club was indebted to Mr J. McKenzie for the instruction he had given to children as first year swimmers. It -was decided that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Mr McKenzie.

The chairman referred to the exhibition given on Sunday morning at the Carterton swimming baths by Mrs McCabe, of Wellington, and said that he had no doubt that the visit would bear good fruit. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr J. A. B. Lawrence; president, Mr L. J. Fairbrother; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Taplin, E. McKenzie, J. McKenzie, H. Matson, Geo. Brown, W. C. M. Sorensen, C. Holland, L. M. Clark, Alb. Bond; club captain, Miss M. Lawrence; secretary and treasurer, Miss Beryl Matson; general committee, Mesdames D. Bond, A. Desmond, L. Berry, F. Taplin, W. Pinfold, A. Bond, L. J. Fairbrother, Misses Fairbrother, A. Sorensen, J. Stev--ens, Messrs Q. Desmond, B. Desmond, N. Desmond, P. Bond, A. Bond, I. Bond, I. McPhee, D. McPhee, P. L. Becre, L. Berry; handicappers (juniors), Mr J. McKenzie; ladies and intermediate, Mr I. Bond; seniors, Messrs L. J. Fairbrother and 1. Bond; timekeeper and starter, Mr L. J. Fair-' brother; programme committee, Misses Matson and Lawrence; judges, Messrs C. Holland, F. Taplin, L. Berry and C. J. DeLacey. It was decided that subscriptions be the same as last year. It was resolved that the baths be officially opened for the season on Monday evening next, at 8 o’clock with I a series of competitions. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring secretary and treasurer for services rendered the club during the past two years. It was resolved that in future challenge cups which are the property of the club be not taken away from Carterton. The charge for admission to adults at “club night” sports was fixed at 6d. Votes of thanks were passed to the president and the Borough Council.. The baths were opened to the public at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon and were well patronised. DRUIDS’ LODGE INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS. Arch Druid Bro. H. J. Bassett presided over the meeting of Totara Lodge, No. 3, U.A.0.D., last night. The secretary reported that donations from members, to provide Christmas parcels for lodge members on active service overseas, amounted to £22 17s. 0 Visitors from Stonehenge Lodge, of Masterton, Fernleaf Lodge, of Greytown, and Pioneer Lodge No. 25, were present to witness the installation ceremony of the newly-elected officers, which was carried out by the District President, Bro. W. Fryer, assisted by Bro. A. J. Dew, as Master of Ceremony. Favourable reports on members on the sick funds were received after which the sum of £lB 16s was passed for sick pay. ,j Although next lodge night falls on December 27, which is a holiday, it was resolved to hold the meeting as a sufficient number of members had signified their intention of attending. Prior to closing the lodge, the Arch. Druid extended to the members, visitors, and the juvenile members the season’s greetings. Before leaving the visitors were entertained at supper by members of Totara No. 3 Lodge. Personal Items. The late Mr C. Jones was instrumental in organising at the Carterton School the dental clinic, which today is giving such excellent service to children attending the school. Mr and Mrs F. H. Morris, of 29 Rhodes Street, Carterton, announce the engagement of their second eldest daughter, Joyce Evelyn, to Driver Edward Vincent, eldest son of Mr and 'Mrs G. F. Flight, of National Park, Rotorua (overseas). Card Tournament. The prizes at the card tournament held by the Wolf Cub pack were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Parker, 1; Mrs 'Williams Junr., 2. Men’s section: Mrs Paterson, 1; Mr Bambry, 2. County Council Meeting. ' The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council will be held on Thursday' in the P. and A. Society’s building in Memorial Square. A Hot Day. The shade temperature registered in Carterton yesterday afternoon was 86 degrees, it having been the hottest day this summer. Girls’ Club. Members of the Carterton Girls’ Club will stage a programme tohight

at the Regent Theatre. Their performance will be followed by the well known picture, “Here Comes Mr Jordan.” The results of “Name Your Stars” and the colouring competitions will be announced during the interval. Bowling Competitions. Further games in the Carterton Club competitions are as follows: Champion singles: Curtis beat Stent, 20/19. Colts’ singles: D. N. Adams beat E. H. Smith, 21/19; W. H. Smith and B. Catt played a draw, 17/17.

f BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING (“Times- Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr J. W. Card)-, Councillors G. A. .Farrier, W. J. Boston, C. R. Skipage, B. B. Donald, C. C. Kenward, R. R. P. Hardy and T. G. Hardie. The treasurer reported the following bank balances: District Fund A/c, cr. £950 19s 3d; Cemetery A/c, cr. £132 10s 7d; Domain A/c, cr. £24 5s 10d; Mayor's Relief Fund A/c, cr. £74 4s 9d; Water Supply Loan A/c, 1936, cr. £46 16s 3d; Library A/c, cr. £l4 13s lid. Apologies for absence were received from. Councillors H. W. Cundy and S. P, Batcheler. Mr E. Rennick wrote claiming return fares and travelling time when returning home from working on earthquake damage repairs and also a percentage on the total work done. It was resolved that return fares and travelling time be paid, but that the council could not accept any other responsibility.
