SCHOOL PROBLEMS
MILK FOR CHILDREN PROTEST AGAINST CONTINUED ’DELAY EARLY RESUMPTION OF SCHEME DEMANDED. An emphatic stand about the milk in schools scheme was taken by the Masterton Combined School Committees Association, at a meeting held last night. Mr W. R. Nicol presided. Claiming that the meeting represented about 2000 children, the representatives present decided to instruct the secretary (Mr H. Scott) to write to the Minister of Health, entering an emphatic protest against the continued delay in resuming the milk supply scheme in local schools, and stating that they hoped that the scheme would be in operation early in February, after the school vacation. It was pointed out that the association was prepared to call a public meeting if the position was not remedied. The appointment of permanent caretakers for grade 5 and higher grade schools was urged, and it was agreed to communicate with the authorities to see if the Government would be prepared to include a proposal of this kind in its rehabilitation scheme. It was decided to send a deputation to the Wairarapa College Board of Governors to see if the Assembly Hall could be made available for primary school concerts. The changing of teachers during the school year and staffing difficulties were discussed. Members expressed their dissatisfaction with the position, but recognised that a contributory factor was the present war conditions. The matter would be taken up again at some future date. The next meeting was fixed for the first Thursday in March, at the Lansdowne School.
