EKETAHUNA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mrs E. Albretchsen presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Women’s Institute. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames F. Hooper, Schormann and Higginson. Mrs Sturgeon read the financial report which' showed the Institute to have a good credit balance. The president in welcoming members and visitors wished them the compliments of the season. Birthday posies were presented to those members whose birthdays occur (during December and January. A shoulder spray was presented to Mrs Kensington, of Palmerston North, who was a foundation member of the Eketahuna Institute. A community sing was greatly enjoyed. . Miss M. Hooper gave an elocutionary item entitled “The Housekeepers' Soliliquy.” Mrs Hart and Mrs Fraser acted as hostesses and served afternoon tea. Miss Hooper, on behalf of the members, wished the president and officers a happy Christmas. Mrs E. Albretchsen suitably replied. The competitions resulted as follows: ■ —Passing the parcel, Mrs W. Daniel. Trees, Mrs T. D. Oliver. Premier bloom, Mrs Baucke, 1; Mrs Carter, 2; Mrs Fauvel, 3. Three flowers, Mrs Baucke, 1; Mrs Carter, 2; Mrs B. Morris and Mrs Duncan, equal, 3. Soldier’s scarf, Mrs C. Farrow, 1; Miss N. Farrow, 2; Mrs Baucke, 3.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE WINNERS OF COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville District Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs A. Larsen yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs Baine) presided over a good attendance of members. The motto was given by Mrg Wilson. Three letters were received from soldiers overseas, expressing thanks for parcels from the Institute. Mrs F. Pain gave an interesting report on the council meeting held at Carterton. A bring-and-buy stall did brisk business. It was decided to give cigarettes or tobacco to soldiers home from overseas, and a package was forwarded to Gnr., D. Smith. The competitions resulted as follows: —Best Christmas novelty: Mrs F. Pain 1, Miss J. Larsen 2, Mrs Baine 3. Best bloom: Mrs O. Mortensen 1, Miss J. Larsen 2, Mesdames G. Nielsen, F. Pain and G. McWhirter, equal, 3. Mrs Wilson thanked Mrs Larsen for the use of her home. Mrs Baine wished the members a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, and expressed the hope that next Christmas would be celebrated in an atmosphere of peace. A vote of thanks was passed to the hostesses, Mrs Godden and Miss J. Larsen.
