CHRISTMAS GIFT SALE SUBSTANTIAL SUM CLEARED A most successful Christmas gift sale organised by the Mefhodist Women's Mission Auxiliary and Girls’ Life Brigade, in aid of the Solomon Islands rehabilitation fund, was held in the Methodist Hall last night. The stalls did excellent business, over £5O being cleared. The cooking competitions resulted as follows:—Pikelets, Mrs Speight; plain sponge, adults, Miss Dean 1, Mrs Jamieson 2; girls, Noeline Dewar 1. Buttonholes: Barbara Gronn 1, Betty Needham 2, Shirley McKenzie 3. Lady’s spray, Margaret Gronn 1, Nola Saunders 2, Valerie Teeboon 3. Soft toys: May Wellington 1, Ellen Wellington 2. Apron: Junior girls, Doreen McKinstry 1, Marjorie McKinstry 2. Coat hanger, Valerie Teeboon 1, May Wellington 2, Joan Whittaker 3. A short musical programme was rendered, those contributing being the Girls’ Life Brigade (choruses), K. Wiltshire, Shirley Watson, Joan O’Hara, Mr Barns and Jack Baillie.

In opening the sale the Rev G. H. Goodman spoke of the object of the sale—to restore the Methodist Mission property and plantation destroyed by war action. Votes of thanks to all who had assisted to make the gathering such a success were carried by acclamation. The Boys’ Life Brigade conducted the candle lightning, golf putting and nail driving competitions.
