MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL t TE WHITI BRIDGE COSTS CONDITION OF DISTRICT ROADS The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held today. The chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, presided. There were also present Messrs J. W. Colquhoun, J. Donald and P. R. Welch. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs H. H. Mawley, G. Moore and W. I. Armstrong. The Minister of Works advised that the Government was not able to agree to the extra cost incurred as the result of the suspension of work on the Te Whiti bridge being financed from the War Expenses Account. “The men were taken off the job for defence work. Surely the Government should pay the cost involved on account of the suspension,” observed Mr Lee.
It was decided to ask Mr G. H. Mackley, M.P., to take up the matter with the Government. “You have only to go around the roads to see that they have suffered,” said Mr Lee, when a letter was received advisifig that the Main Highways Board required detailed reports on the order of State and main high-, ways throughout the Dominion. The action of the County Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, in supplying the information was endorsed.
