I FACILITIES FOR MERCHANT | NAVY MEN. PLANS FOR STREET APPEAL IN MASTER TON. A representative and successful meeting was convened in Masterton yesterday to organise a street day appeal in Masterton on Friday, December 10, for the British Sailors’ Society. The Mayoress of Masterton, Mrs T. Jordan, presided, and the following organisations were represented: Townswomen’s Guild, Navy League, Red Cross, W.D.F.U., Welfare League, St. Mathew’s Guild, St. Vincent De Paul, St. John Ambulance, Epiphany Ladies’ Guild, Upper Plain Institute, Kaituna-Fern-ridge Institute, Lady Teachers’ Association, Lady Galway Guild, SolwayManaia Institute, Kopuaranga Institute, W.W.S.A., Girl Guides, W.C.T.U., Labour Party, Plunket Society, Knox Guild, League of Mothers, Methodist Guild, and the National Party. Mrs Rollet, of Wellington, spoke briefly of the work being done among the merchant navy men by the British Sailors’ Society, and outlined the plans for acquiring a Merchant Navy Men’s Hostel in Wellington, a building equipped with writing and reading rooms, library, chapel, social hall, billiard tables and accommodation for about twenty beds. Mrs Jordan called for helpers from the different organisations represented and a roster of helpers was arranged.
