Waste Paper Depot.
Arrangements are being made in Masterton for the opening of a new depot for the receipt of waste paper. It is hoped to open the depot within the next few days and to have a regular weekly collection of paper in the business area. Amateur Athletics. The Masterton Amateur Athletic Club will open its track season at the Park Oval' on Wednesday evening, commencing at 6.3 p.m. A series of sprint and field events will be decided, and an invitation is extended to all track men, especially junior competitors, to be present. Mine Idle Through Heating. The Liverpool State mine will be idle till tomorrow. What is termed “considerable heating” in one section has kept the mine idle since Friday. Referring to the growing burden of farm indebtedness, the journal quotes the ' Dairy Commission as having reported that only in exceptional cases was a dairy farm unmortgaged. Boot and Shoe Statistics. The statistics of the boot and shoe industry for 1942-43 show an increased ■ production of 119,113 pairs of adults boots, or 5.1 per cent above the figures for 1941-42, but there arc recessions in the numbers and values of children’s , shoes, adults’ sandals, slippers, and ■ canvas and rubber shoesh. In spite of a reduction of 107, or 2.3 per cent, in ■ the number of persons engaged, the 1 salaries and wages paid advanced £91,81.5, or 10.1 per cent.
