NEW AMERICAN MINISTER
MR WILLIAM C. BURDETT. WELCOMED IN WELLINGTON. The new American Minister to New Zealand, the Hon. William C. Burdett, arrived in Wellington yesterday from Auckland. He was accompanied by Mrs Burdett and their two daughters, Mr Raymond Cox, Charge d’Affaires at the United States Legation in Wellington, and Mr A. D. Mclntosh, Secretary of External Affairs. Mr and Mrs Burdett and their daughters were met by Captain H. G. Helmore, A.D.C., representing the Gover-nor-General, the Deputy-Prime Minister and New Zealand Minister to Washington, Mr Nash, and the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, who had made the acquaintance of Mr Burdett in the United States while he was on his way to North Africa last year. Others present included the United Kingdom High Commissioner, Sir Harry Batterbee, the Canadian High Commissioner, Dr. Riddell, Mrs Raymond Cox, and members of the United States Legation staff. Mr Burdett spent yesterday resting from his journey, during which he became ill and spent some time in hospital in Australia. It is understood that no arrangements have yet been made for Mr Burdett to present his credentials to the Governor-General.
