GREYTOWN
OBITUARY MR ANDREW HUTCHESON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred at the Buchanan Home, Grey town, on Sunday of Mr Andrew Hutcheson, who had been a resident of the Wairarapa for 35 years. He was born in Glasgow 75 years ago and started business there as a baker and confectioner. Subsequently he went to” Cape Town where he was similarly engaged. After spending a few years there he came to New Zealand soon after the South African War and was employed on many of the large stations as cook. During the Great War of 1914-1918, while working on Mr Riddiford’s Orongorongo Station, he made many cakes which were raffled or sold and brought in large sums for patriotic purposes. For this work he was especially mentioned and congratulated by Lady Liverpool, the wife of the then Governor of New Zealand. The late Mr Hutcheson was a true Scot, possessing an independent nature. Although during recent years, owing to an accident, he was unable to walk about, he still carried on his duties as a cook.
The funeral took place at the Greytown Cemetery yesterday. The pallbearers, old friends of the deceased, were Messrs F. Brough, J. McKenzie, F. McKellar, F. Prussing, R. McKenzie and F. Bell. The Rev. J. C. Abbott conducted the service at the graveside.
