BISHOP OF MELANESIA

STIRRING ADDRESS LAST NIGHT SOLOMONS MISSIONARY WORK A stirring address was given by the Bishop of Melanesia, the Rt Rev H. W. Baddeley in St Matthew’s Church, Masterton, last night. Bishop Baddeley was a combatant officer in the last war and was awarded the D.S.O. and the M.C.. with Bar. He has been Bishop of Melanesia for some years, and when the Solomons were invaded by the Japanese, he remained at his post to protect, so far as possible, the mission and the interests of the natives. There was a large attendance at the church. Bishop Baddeley spoke of the many examples of loyalty shown by the natives. The work of the nurses and the missionaries was carried on in face of the Japanese bombardment and occupation. Subsequently they escaped to the bush and set up new homes. Both American and Australian army leaders had paid glowing tributes to the intelligence and to the assistance given by the natives. The Bishop detailed the extensive damage to mission hospitals and headquarters. The nurses were now back to their old posts and were continuing their humane work
