Extensive sweeps over the Aegean Sea were made: yesterday by figliters of. the. Middle East Command. Spitfires; and ! Hurricanes carried out an offensive reconnaissance of Rhodes and Crete. Damage was inflicted on enemy installations in Crete- by Hurricanes. Long-range fighters- over Leros shot down an Ar ado 196. A Seibel ferry, west of Kalinos, was attacked by Beaufighters. After catching fire, it'was seen. tp. blpw. up. Last- night the airfields of Calato and Maritza, in Rhodes, were bombed; Preliminary reports indicate- that, both attacks were, successful; From these, and other operations three of our aircraft, are missing. Medium bombers, escorted' by- longrange fighters, attacked, the. airfield-, at Eleusis, near Athens, andi the. hgrhour of- Sibenik, in. Yugoslavia, yesterday, states, Allied Headquarters. Fighters and fighter-bombers attacked’ targets in the battle area- and- shipping- off: the Adriatic. coast of. Italy.. During; these operations 13: enemy aircraft, were- destroyed. Three, of. our. planes ar,e, missing. The air raids against Istres and Salon; near Marseilles, mark a renewed- Allied offensive against German torpedobomber bases on. the flank of. the Western Mediterranean shipping, lanes, says Reuter's Algiers correspondent).
