RONGOKOKAKO

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE EIGHTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Rongokokako Women’s Institute celebrated its eighth birthday on Saturday. The president, Mrs W. J. O’Neil, presided over a very large attendance and welcomed visitors from Eketahuna, Hamua, Nireaha, Kaiparoro and Hastwells. A report on the half-yearly council meeting of the Bush District Federation was read by Mrs K. Falkner, who was accorded a vote of thanks. Tins of biscuits were handed in by members for soldiers’ parcels. Shoulder sprays were presented to the president, treasurer and secretary, and to the visiting presidents. Buttonholes were presented to all visitors. The social hour commenced with a trio by Misses P. Goggin, L. Winter and U. Payne, with Miss H. Winter at the piano. A recitation was given by Miss P. Goggin, a duet by Misses P. Goggin and H. Winter, with Miss L. Winter at the piano. Vocal items by Misses P. Goggin, U. Payne, H. Winter and L. Winter.

A skill test was won by Mrs S. Smith. The last item was a play, “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” presented by members of the Eketahuna Drama Circle, and was thoroughly enjoyed. Taking part in the play were Mrs R. Duncan, Mrs Bowering and Miss A. Schultz. A vote of thanks was accorded all who contributed to the programme.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mrs O’Neil called on Mrs S. J. Hobbs (Hamua) to light the candles on the cake, and on Mrs E. Albrechtsen (Eketahuna) to blow them out. The oldest member, Mrs Morriss, senr., cut the first slice.

The competitions for the month resulted as follow: —Rhubarb, Mrs Morriss, Senr., 1, Mrs F. Baucke 2, Mrs S. Smith 3. Three flowers: Nirs H. Simpson 1, Mrs S. Smith 2, Mrs Morriss, Senr., and Mrs S. Malton, equal, 3. Best bloom: Mrs M. Morriss 1, Mrs S. Smith and Mrs R.'McAnulty, equal, 2, Mrs J. P. Sigvertsen 3. . It was decided that the competition for three roses be held over until the December meeting.

Mrs O’Neil thanked Mrs F. Schormann for having judged the competitions.
