STEADY PROGRESS

RECONSTRUCTION WORK IN MASTERTON EARTHQUAKE DAM AGED BUILDINGS REMODELLING OF COSY THEATRE Steady progress is being made in Masterton on earthquake reconstruction work which is being carried out on business premises. <k.' At the Cosy Theatre the contractors are going ahead with the demolition, and reconstruction work is being undertaken by means of reinforced concrete piers and beams. In addition to being strengthened to earthquake resisting standards the whole interior of the building is to be remodelled and when the work is finished the theatre will be a modern building in every respect. It is expected that the work will take six months to complete.

Construction work on the Bank of New Zealand premises has been completed, and operations are now centred on fibre plastering and the ceiling work. Bands of reinforced concrete piers and beams have made the building exceedingly strong. The banking chamber has been relined with a concrete wall six inches thick.

It is anticipated that the bank will be completed* by about February, 1944. k x - / The premises occupied by Messrs Graham & Co. have been completed. Good progress is being made on * Messrs Gray Bros’ premises. The construction work on the ground floor has been completed and a start has been made on the next floor.

Messrs W. Rigg, Ltd., are the contractors for the above work.
