MASTERTON COUNTY

BUSINESS AT YESTERDAY’S MEETING SEVERAL COUNCILLORS ILL REMOVAL OF ROAD BLOCKS The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee. presided. There were also present Councillors P. R. Welch, J. W. Colquhoun and J. Donald. Leave of absence was granted Mr H. H. Mawley, ‘chairman of the finance committee, and Mr G. Moore, both being in hospital. Mr W. I. Armstrong was recently granted three months’ leave of absence on account of ill health. The Area Commander, No. 7 Defence Area, advised that all emergency defence works could now be abandoned. The removal of road blocks and clearance of wire from beaches would be treated as urgent. The council decided to reply that it considered that all blocks, gun pits and material should be removed by the Defence authorities at the earliest opportunity. The Public Works Department advised that Cabinet had approved of a £1 for £1 additional subsidy of £370 towards the finished cost of the Wainui-o-Mapu road bridge. The Valuer General advised that under the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act the vendor or lessor was required to state the latest Government valuation on a property. The Valuation Department had agreed to supply free of charge the existing valuation. The co-operation of local bodies was sought. The council pointed out that it had always given the information without charge to bona fide applicants and would continue to do so.

The following notices of sale of property in the county were received:— George Moore to Waiorongo Trust No. 1. John Moore to Waiorongo Trust No. 2.

The ranger reported having impounded 60 cattle and 5 horses.

The engineers, Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt reported that two piles had been driven on the Ruamahanga bridge job at Te Whiti last month. The Wangaehu bridge had been completed. The overseer, Mr B. L. Larson, reported that culverts had been replaced, grading and maintenance carried out and slips cleared in the various ridings. The chairman and the county clerk reported on an interview with Sir William Perry regarding flooding on the Te Whiti settlement road and it was decided to accept his offer to co-oper-ate and put in hand the necessary work at the earliest opportunity. The next meeting of the county will be held on December 7.
