Horton), m a extending to them the best wishes of - the citizens, said that the guests were - sons of residents of the district, and ', many of them already had brothers serving with the forces. ’. Miss Higginson, president of the ;. local Returned Services’ Association, ;. said that the soldiers of the last war ■ would watch the interests of the men t overseas. On behalf of the Citizens Committee she presented each soldier _ with a writing case. Mrs R. Beu made a gift of woollen ” comforts to the men on behalf of the ? School Committee. > The monthly meeting of the Grey- • town District High School Committee ■ was held on Wednesday evening, there ■ being present: Messrs H. E. Carter • (chairman), W. Grigg, R. O’Neale, L. i R. Huntley and Mrs Knell, secretary. - The headmaster, Mr S. C. Shedden, was ■ also present. The headmaster reported the roll to • be as follows: —Primary 310, secondary ; 38. Sixty new library books had been received. The Automobile Association patrolman had visited the school and given a talk on “Safety First," and had also given a screening of a film exemplifying road rules. The Education Board and Mr Donald, district board member, replied to the committee’s letter protesting against the too frequent changes in the staff, which were becoming more aggravated, due to war appointments The replies stated that the Act demanded that teachers returned from service with, tne forces must be given their positions back. It was admitted that this would necessitate many transfers, but could not in many cases be avoided. The Wellington Education Board approved of the school being closed for : the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Show. The chairman reported that Mr J. Reid had handed him the Interhouse < Cup, engraved with the name of last year’s winner. Mr Reid was accorded I a vote of thanks. 1 The visiting committee for the month, Messrs Huntly and Wiggins, 1 submitted a report on a footpath to the 1 bicycle shed, and the chairman was authorised to have the work done. < Bowling. f The local bowling green will not be t officially opened till the end of the month.
