CARTERTON

ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH SUCCESSFUL CONCERT (“Times-Age” Special.) Recently a most successful concert, organised by Mrs W. J. Couling, was held in the King's Theatre, the proceeds to go towards the renovating of St. Andrew’s Manse, which -was damaged in the recent earthquake. The programme was of a very high standard. The girls of Solway College, in charge of Miss Mavis Macdonald, charmed the audience with their singing, while “Extracts from a Midsummer Night’s Dream,” performed by pupils of Wairarapa College, provided something unusual. Daniel Davey and Miss Beulah Hirst, with her younger pupils, provided the rest of the programme, and the efforts of the performers were greatly appreciated. The stage was tastefully set.. A feature of the concert was Miss Macdonald’s playing. The Rev Couling thanked all those who had assisted. Mrs Couling introduced Mrs Gair, Miss Hirst. Miss Macßae and Miss Macdonald to the audience and presented each with a posy. Lorraine Bruce presented Mrs Couling with a bouquet of flowers. At the conclusion of the concert the visitors were entertained at supper. s LEAGUE OF MOTHERS MONTHLY MEETING. There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Carterton League of Mothers yesterday. Mrs Every presided. The thought for the month was given by Mrs Jimmison and the hint by Mrs C. K. Goodin. Mrs Everj' welcomed the Greytown' Choir, who gave a splendid performance, comprising part songs, solos, monologues and pianoforte duets which were greatly enjoyed. Mrs Smallwood, of Greytown, gave a most interesting account of a trip to Dannevirke to witness a children’s concert, children taking part coming from all the schools in and around Dannevirke, a special feature being the drill displays by small children. ' A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Smallwood and the members of the choir. Mrs Every spoke of the regret felt ac the impending departure of Mrs W. P. Williams, one of the League’s most enthusiastic members, and Mrs Ansell who was leaving to reside in Petone. Personal Items Tomorrow evening at the Belvedere schoolroom the residents of Belvedere and Carrington will tender a “parcel evening” to Miss Cynthia Bond, at which Private L. Manahan will be the recipient of a presentation. Officers and men of the* 27th Company, Traffic Control Corps, will tonight entertain their commander, Lieut. A. E. Ansell, at the Masonic Hall. The guest of honour is to be transferred to Petone. Interesting Lecture An interesting lecture on the “Seven Times Dispersion of Israel” was given m the Masonic Hall, Carterton, last night by Mr G. R. McChesney, who showed the reason for Britain’s marvellous expansion. Instead of Israel fulfilling the conditions laid down in Deuteronomy, ch. 28, 29, 30, said the lecturer, and thereby immediately receiving the great national wealth that was promised 700 odd years from 1446 8.C., she lapsed into idolatry and sin, bringing about her downfall, which commenced by the division of the nation into two houses, the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern house of Judah. The committee is spar- , X n ° Gfl '° rt 10 make the dance a suc - A , +l Wa9e^ and Contributions At the Wairarapa Power Board’s meeung yesterday, following on the approvai of the principle of a wage and subsidy scale f or lhe training of ex-service men, it was resolved that ; the Power Boards’ Association be ask ed to take action with the idea of fixing a schedule of wages and contributions to be paid by the Supply Authorities and by the Government on which such engagements will be made these to be uniform throughout the Dominion. Emphasis was laid on the added need for trained men in preference to allowing them to add to the number of unskilled workers in the Dominion. On Active Service _ Twenty-five men from the staff of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board arc on active service with the New Zealand forces. Deduction of Union Fees At the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Power Board, it was stated that instructions by the Man Power Officer .to deduct union fees from wages paid to a Power Board employee had been referred to the Power Boards’ Association, who informed the Board that in the opinion of their solicitor the amount would have to be paid. Boy Scout Card Party. The card party held by the Boy Scout Committee was well attended. Prizes were won as follows:—Ladies: Mrs A. Knutson, 1; Mrs M. E. Eagle, 2 Men: Mr Morris, 1; Mr Wadsworth, 2.' Sale of Health Stamps. The sale of health stamps at the Carterton Post Office up till yesterday amounted to £32 15s l|d. Post Office Hours on Monday. On Monday the Carterton Post Office will be closed in all branches with the exception of the telephone exchange. Postmen's and rural deliveries will not ' be made.
