CHINESE STEWARD SPENDS 133 DAYS ON RAFT AWARDED BRITISH EMPIRE / MEDAL (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, October 19. Poon Lim, a 25-year-old Chinese steward, who spent 133 days on a raft in the South Atlantic, refused to speak to pressmen when he arrived in Britain from. America to receive the British Empire Medal from his Majesty for his exceptional courage, fortitude and resource. Lim said it would be a grave discourtesy to tell his story before seeing his Majesty. When his ship was torpedoed, Lim boarded a raft with fifty days’ food and water supplies. When these, were exhausted he fashioned- a fishing hook from a nail, caught and ate raw flsh and seagulls and collected water by spreading a lifejacket on the raft. Lim. eventually was rescued by a Brazilian fisherman.
