BURMA BORDER

SALWEEN RIVER CROSSED BY JAPANESE PUNISHING AMERICAN RAID. ON ENEMY CONCENTRATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) CHUNGKING, October 19. The first indication that the Japanese have established a bridgehead across the Salween River was given when General Stilwell reported that his fighter-bombers, supoorting Chinese ground forces, attacked Japanese troop concentrations and supply dumps at Luku, in Yunnan Province, on the east bank of the Salween, northwards of the point where the old Burma Road crosses the Salween. The Associated Press points out that the Chinese have not acknowledged the loss of Luku, or any Japanese crossing of the Salween. General Stilwell’s communique stated that heavy casualties were inflicted in the Luku raid.
