Shining Cuckoo Arrives.
A Masterton resident heard two shining cuckoos on Tuesday, October 12, one in Lansdowne and the other near the Waipoua River. The shining cuckoo passes the winter in the Solomon Islands, and comes to New Zealand every spring for the breeding season. The birds heard on Tuesday are the first so far reported locally this season.
Kindergarten Council Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Free Kindergarten Council was held yesterday, when Mrs C. J. Williams presideci over a good attendance. Arrangements were made for two members to attend the bi-annual conference of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union in Wellington and it was decided to hold a shop day near the end of November. More material will be purchased for making children’s garments. Afternoon tea was served and a bring-and-buy was held.
West School Committee. The Masterton West School Committee held its monthly meeting last night when Mr W. J. Campbell presided in the absence of Mr R. S. Graham. Mr H. L. Esau submitted his plan for the beautification of the school grounds and it was considered by members that when the scheme is completed the area will be one of the most attractive in the town. It was decided to call a meeting of the chairman and secretaries of school committees in the district with a view to the formation of a combined schools’ committtee.
