RIVER CONTROL
CATCHMENT DISTRICT PROPOSED. EROSION OF WAINGAWA RIVER. The proposed setting up o£ a catchment district in the Wairarapa to control rivers and erosion is mentioned by the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, in a letter to Mr. J. Robertson. Referring to an occasion in May last, when he was interviewed by Mr. Robertson regarding erosion of the Waingawa river bed below the main highway, Mr. Semple states: “This matter has been examined several times, but it is considered that work done by a bulldozer in the stream would not have any real value owing to the rapid changes in the channel and the great width of the channel concerned. The control of these tributaries can be successfully undertaken only in 'a comprehensive way and I am accordingly putting the question before the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council with a view to consideration being' given to setting up a catchment district to cover the whole area drained by the Ruamahanga River.”
