DRINKING SEA WATER
NEW METHOD DEVISED. Contrary to. general belief, there now exists a means of making salt water drinkable by castaways in ships’ boats and aircraft’s rafts. It was announced in June by the United States Navy Department in Washington that a practical method had been devised, and demonstrations by two Navy officers showed that, with a small package of black and white chemicals and three plastic bags, more than a quart of fresh water could be made from a small quantity of sea water. Ten boxes the size of a pack of cards will enable a man to provide himself with drinking water for 20 days. The new method is the first making it possible to remove both the sodium chloride and magnesium chloride which make sea water unfit to drink.
