CAPUA AS PIVOT
GROWING THREAT TO NEW ENEMY LINE. ALLIES APPROACHING GREAT MAIN ROADS. (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 3. Capua, ahead of the Fifth Army, is the pivot on which Marshal Kesselring is resting the German line, says a Reuter correspondent. The less of Capua, coupled with the Allied possession of Benevento, would end the attempt to make a serious stand along the River Volturno. Two great main roads run to Rome from Capua, one following the coast and the other sweeping inland. Dispatches from the Eighth Army front on the other side of the Appenines say a double advance is being made —one force striking across country'drom Lucera on a line leading to Rome and northwards, the other force pushing on beyond San Severe. The advance is continuing despite torrential rain. The Eighth Army is advancing at the rate of 15 miles daily.
