WEDGE CLEAVED

BETWEEN FIFTH AND EIGHTH ARMIES CONTINUED ALLIED PROGRESS IN ITALY. GERMANS IN TERROR OF ITALIAN . GUERILLAS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, October 3. The Fifth Army's right wing, in its mountain drive, has cleared the Germans from the Appenine wedge between the Fifth and Eighth armies, says Reuter’s Algiers correspondent. The most important towns captured in this latest thrust were Grottamnarda, on the hill road from Benevento, and Valletta-, a few miles further south. The Eighth Army has advanced 18 miles from Lucera. Armed bands of Italian guerillas are actively pursuing the Germans in the area around Naples. German prisoners brought in confess that they are in terror cf these roving guerillas. Moroccan Goumiers (sharpshooters) in Corsica captured Teghime Hill, the key to Bastia, says a French communique. This hill commands the roads from the St. Florent cross-roads to Bastia. French and American troops have reached the coast near Duri. This is the most northerly point attained. The -blockade is constantly being tightened against Bastia and the beaches from which the enemy is hastily attempting to evacuate his personnel and material.
