LOST AT SEA
PRIVATE LEO G. McCRACKEN. The many friends of Mr and Mrs T. McCracken, of Masterton, will learn with regret of the death at sea of their third and youngest son, Private Leo G. McCracken. Born in Masterton in 1919 he was old boy of St. Patrick’s School and the Masterton Technical School. Well known amongst the younger set, he was held in high esteem for his genial disposition, having taken a keen interest in sport. Prior to his enlistment he was a junior partner of the firm of Messrs Rew and McCracken, Ltd. He volunteered for service and left New Zealand with the Third Echelon, seeing service in Libya, and was taken prisoner during the battle of El Alamein. Later he was reported lost at sea. The late Pte. McCracken is survived by his parents and two brothers, L.A.C. B. J. McCracken, R.N.Z.A.F., and T. R. McCracken, of Miriam Street, Masterton, to whom the sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended in their sad loss.
