ANNUAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP F. O'BRIEN WINS SENIOR EVENT The Wairarapa College annual cross country championships were run from the Masterton Park Oval in brilliantly fine weather yesterday afternoon. There were 180 runners and keen interest was taken in the event by a large crowd of spectators. Results: —• Senior championship (Masterton Harrier Club’s senior cup), F. F. O’Brien 1, J. M. Eccles 2, N. R. Jacobsen 3. Intermediate championship, P. L. Tobin 1, D. E. Wilmshurst 2, A. A. Scott 3. Junior championship (Masterton Harrier Club’s junior cup), J. C. Geary 1, A. W. O'Brien 2, N. F. Desmond 3.
Hens Killed by Dogs. Forty-nine hens out of a total flock of 54 were killed by dogs which broke into a Herne Bay (Auckland) fowlrun at the weekend. Thanksgiving Meeting. There was a large attendance at the McGregor Hall, Masterton, last night, when a No-Licence thanksgiving service was held. The service was taken by Mr Sims and the Rev. G. H. Goodman. Mssterton Electorate, Good progress is being made with the scrutiny of the roll for the Masterton electorate. It is hoped to make a start with the official count before the end of the week. Possibly the count may be completed this week, but more likely it will be next week before the final figures are available. Tea and Sugar Coupons. The Food and Rationing Controller, Mr J. E. Thomas, announced yesterday that the present ration rates of Boz tea and 31b sugar a month would apply in October. Tea coupons numbers 45 to 48' were each available for 2oz of tea, and sugar coupons numbers 45 to 48 each for 12oz of sugar during the calendar month. Petrol Ration for October, The Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr Sullivan, announced yesterday that War Cabinet had decided to continue the petrol ration for private motorists at the recent rate of half a coupon, and accordingly coupon No. 4 at half its face value would be available to private motorists for October. Parcels for Forces Overseas. Christmas parcel postings in Auckland for the forces overseas are already heavier than last year, and it is expected that there will be a further large volume when the special concession rates for the Pacific area apply between mid-October and mid-November. The September postings arc mainly for Britain. Art Union Winner. The winner of the “Lot to Lift” art union is Mr Francis Norman Hunt, retired passenger foreman, N.Z. Railways, aged 72, of Napier. He was visiting a neighbour whose daughter was listen-ing-in to the results and heard Mr Hunt’s name given as the winner. Three of his four sons are in the Army and one is missing in Burma. Mr Hunt said he would give the prize away to have the boy brought home safe.
