ATTACK ON EMDEN
MADE BY FLYING FORTRESSES IN DAYLIGHT ' ENEMY SHIPPING BOMBED OFF DUTCH COAST. WIDESPREAD RAIDS ON FRANCE. LONDON,. September 27. Allied <iir forces based in Britain had another busy day against the enemy today, when they attacked targets at Emden, shipping off the Dutch coast and airfields in Northern France. Flying Fortresses, escorted by Thunderbolts, attacked the German naval base of Emden. The Thunderbolts put up a new record for long-distance penetration into enemy territory by fighter aircraft. Typhoons and Typhoon bombers went for enemy shipping off the Dutch coast. They sank a tug and a barge and scored hits on other ships. American Marauders, escorted by R A.F. and Allied Spitfires, attacked an airfield in Northern France and another formation went for an airfield west of Paris. Mitchells attacked marshalling yards, bridges, locomotives and a repair shop. Fourteen German aircraft were shot down by R.A.F. fighters. Nine of ours are missing.' _______
