GREYTOWN
BOROUGH COUNCIL BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borotigh Council was held last night. There were present: Mr A. W. Horton (Mayor), Councillors I. Blissett, A. Stuart, E. Balfour, H. J. Farley, F. Wood and H. McKenna. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors W. A. Tate, H. C. Trotman and G. Eagar. Councillor Stuart asked what had been done in reference to Mr W. Jordan’s fowls and ducks. ' The Mayor stated that at present Mr Jordan was within his rights and no action could be taken by the council. The Health Officer reported that he had inspected the property and no offence had so far been committed. The council had done all that was possible in response to the complaints made. A. Butler wrote complaining of the amount of the account sent to him for repairs to his chimney. He also asked that trees on the road opposite his house be cut. The council decided that no action be taken in regard to the chimney account and to reply to Mr Butler that the trees would receive attention. It was decided that soldiers on furlough'from overseas would receive a drivers’ licence free whilst on leave. The Fire Brigade wrote stating that it had decided not to purchase a new siren, the cost of which was £4O. The Fire ’Brigade asked for permission to again use the siren for the purpose of a fire alarm. This was agreed to. The Defence Department wrote stating that the council gas shop would continue to be rented from the council as the headquarters of the Greytown Battalion Home Guard. Mr T. N. Smallwood forwarded a plan of the sub-division of land for the approval of the council. He asked the council to waive the right in regard to the width of Kuratawhiti Street fronting his property. The Mayor stated that this street was a busy one and that in view of future traffic it should be of uniform width to the borough boundary. The request was declined. The Wairarapa P. .and A. Society wrote asking that. “People’s Day” in connection with the show be declared a holiday. This was agreed to on the iiquhl fprrrm It was decided to fill in the retort pits at the old gas works. TOWN HALL “FOR EVER CHERISHED.” There will be presented tonight a sports picture which should make an immediate appeal because of the thrilling story it tells. The principal characters are portrayed by Pat O’Brien, Ronald Reagan, Donald Crisp and Gale Page.
