COUNTY AFFAIRS RESTORATION OF BRIDGE. I (“Times-Age” Special.) . Mr J. B. Carruthers presided at the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council. The chairman referred to the recent deaths of Mrs A. J. Perry, wife of Councillor’ Perry, and a sister of Councillor C. Davie; Mr W. R. Godfrey, who had been a councillor for some years in the early days of the council, and Mr J. Brown, who had been an employee of the council for a number of years. Councillors stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect and sympathy. The consulting engineer advised that the proposals for the restoration of the Stirling bridge had been placed before the Public Works Department. The scheme adopted by the council had been approved and authority to proceed with the plans was now awaited. Several ratepayers wrote asking that the council take steps to metal the track giving access to the ford at the Stirling bridge site. The council decided to inform the ratepayers that the track was over private properly and that the use of the same was granted at the discretion of the owners. The Public Works Department was being asked to give authority for the approach to the new bridge to be constructed now so that it could be used in conjunction with the ford. SOLDIERS’ COMFORTS CARD TOURNAMENT. The borough ladies’ ■ Soldiers’ Comforts Committee held its monthly flag 500 tournament in the Anglican Hall. The games were controlled by Mr Mereywether. The winners were:— Ladies: Mesdames D. Hart and F. Hooper. Men: Messrs F. J. Mcßride and W. Evans. The Misses Anderson were the hostesses. Mr W. J. Manser donated a soldier’s cake to be sent to a local soldier overseas. Mr Mereywether won the competition for the cake which is to be forwarded to Munro Ramsay, who is on a warship. The prizes were given by Mrs W. N. Richardson and Miss A. Anderson. Mrs A. Fredericksen made a donation of ss. Personal Items. Mrs F. J. Mcßride, Alfredton Road,! is visiting Blenheim. Mrs Lockhart is on a visit to Hast-, ings. (Other items of provincial news will be found on Page 3.)
