SOUTH WAIRARAPA COUNCIL DOGS IN VICINITY OF WATERWORKS. PROTECTION OF WATER RACE FROM CATTLE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Councillor A. E. Reid presided over the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council yesterday. There were also present: Councillors M. J. McGregor, F. Court, L. S. Gallon, E. W. Allen, R. O. Rayner, A. McGregor and C. Cameron. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £12,342. It was reported that current rates were coming in very satisfactorily, and that 61 per cent had been received. A case of fever was reported by the health officer. The patient was removed to the Greytown Hospital and later transferred to Masterton. Mr Ellett submitted a special report upon dogs which were kept in close proximity to the Carterton and Masterton borough water supply in the Mount Holdsworth district, and notice had been served upon the owner of the dogs in connection therewith. Permission was granted Mrs Smith to put in a l jin. pipe from the Taratahi water-race to tanks at a cottage occupied by Mr Buckeridge. Mr Cameron, Wellington, wrote complaining of storm water flooding his property at Waihakeke. The council denied responsibility. The chairman reported that along with Councillor Court and the overseer, he had inspected the water-race on Mr Rayner's property at “The Cliffs,” and had come to an arrangement with Mr Rayner to protect the race from being damaged by cattle. Mr Rayner had since expressed the opinion that the race could be more securely protected by the use of concrete. Councillors thought that it would be too expensive to concrete 24 chains of the race. It was eventually decided that half a chain be concreted, and that the remaining two chains of the waterrace be fenced, Mr Rayner and the county to bear the expense equally. The chairman reported that the staff had commenced the tree planting at the head works of water-races.
