LEAGUE OF MOTHERS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. ("Times-Age" Special.) 1 The League of Mothers celebrated its birthday yesterday afternoon, whei Mrs Smallwood, presided over a good attendance of members. Mesdames M. Maddison and A. Wood were admitted as new members. Mrs Smallwood extended the sympathy of the League, to the Rev Knowles-Smith in the loss of his wife The late' Mrs Knowles-Smith had beei a very keen member of the League. A tribute was paid to Mrs Roosevelt, hei charm and sincerity capturing the hearts of New Zealand women when she made her visit recently. It was decided to place on recorc the excellent service rendered by Mr: Benseman as sick visitor to the hospital. Mrs A. Nichols gave the thought foi the month. Items were given by the Glee Choir Mrs Knell and by Mesdames Eccles and Brooking. Mrs Smallwood made a presentation of a Spindle tree to Mrs E. Richards who at all times has made floral tributes for the League. Red Cross Society. The Red Cross Society held its meeting last night. Mr A. W. Horton occupied the chair. It was stated that the Junior Red Cross members should journey to Martinborough on Saturday, September 18 to take part in a rally in honour oi Miss Crooke, the V.A.D. New Zealand representative. Mr Horton stated that those who recently sat for their Home Nursing examination had passed. The sum of £2l 13s for Prisoner of War Parcel Fund was gratefully received from the Maori Tribal Committee. It was decided that the first aid classes be left in abeyance for the time being owing to the lack of lecturers. Mrs A. Nisbet offered to denote a cake in connection with Red Cross local activities. Mrs G. R. Jury wrote resigning her position as honourary secretary. The resignation was accepted with regret. Miss F. Oxford offered to act as secretary in the meantime.

TOWN HALL TWO BIG FEATURES. Tomorrow night’s programme will contain two features, “Down Mexico - Way” (a spectacular show, featuring Gene Autrey and Smiley Burnette), and “The Devil Pays Off” (a thrilling 2 drama with Osa Massen and Edward a Bromberg in the chief roles).
