ELECTION CAMPAIGN MR J. J. MAHER AT CROSS CREEK. (“Times-Age" Special.) Mr J. J. Maher (National candidate for the Wairarapa seat) addressed a meeting at Cross Creek during the weekend. He was given an attentivehearing. Mr Maher dealt with many matters concerning railway employees in particular, and also elaborated the National Party policy. The candidate departed somewhat from the usual type of political address inasmuch that he suggested that he could probably talk to them on matters that they were not 1 directly interested in, and invited his hearers to ask questions, and when . giving his replies he amplified the answers and dealt very fully with each subject. This manner of address cer- ’ tainly kept the audience alert and interested. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT KAHUTARA. The monthly meeting of the Kahutara Women’s Institute was neld yesterday, Mrs Hood presiding over a goou attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Harland and T. Hood J.unr. The Institute decided to become a member of the Crippled Children’s Society. The members were asked to bring suitable gifts to be sent to the Makogai Leper station. Mrs Hewison donated potatoes to be planted for the potato competition. Cakes are to be packed and sent to local soldiers overseas. A competition for a cushion-cover was won by Mrs Pottinger. The proceeds are to go to the wool and parcel fund. The competition for next month will be a cushion-cover made from a sugar bag. The competitions resulted:—Sponge: Mrs Hewison, 1; Mrs Wilson, 2. Best bloom: Mrs Pottinger, 1; Mrs Hewjson, 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Playle and Corlet. Miniature Rifles. Also in the cast are Allan Jones, Fred Mac Murray and g Akim Tamiroff.
