Keeper of Gaming House Fined. Geoffrey William Snook pleaded guilty in the Magistrates’ Court, Christchurch, yesterday to using premises as a common gaming-house, and was fined £lOO, in default three months’ imprisonment. Snook was described by the police as “one of the big shots,” with two previous convictions. Staff Dance Tonight. The W.F.C.A. Ltd. will hold a staff dance in the Masonic Hall tonight, in honour of Lieut. R. Johnson, who is on furlough from the Middle East. Pool’s Elue River Dance Band will provide the music and novelty dances will be held. A similar dance held recently proved most popular. No Casualty Lists. The Director of the American Red Cross Service Club in Masterton, Mrs Betty Learmont, advises that the club officials are, through some mistaken impression, receiving inquiries regarding American casualty lists. She states that the club has received no casualty lists of any kind. Democratic Labour Campaign. Mr D. Thompson, Democratic Labour Party candidate for the Masterton seat, addressed a well attended meeting at Tiraumea last night, Mr A. G. Houlbrooke presiding. He received an attentive hearing and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Patriotic Fund. In connection with the campaign for raising the remaining portion of the local patriotic fund, £l6OO, by district women’s organisations, there will be stationed in Queen Street, Masterton, each day, two members who will receive donations on behalf of the fund. A graph will be shown, indicating the progress made in collecting donations. Extension of Interhouse Work. It was indicated at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Interhouse Association last night that trophies would be made available by the association for competition among teams from the primary and secondary schools. It was explained that the children’s marching competitions would be held on a separate day to the Interhouse gala day. Gifts from Patriotic Fund. “I am quite satisfied that the New Zealand Patriotic Fund does a great deal of good work,” writes a New Zealand soldier serving in the Middle East to his parents in Masterton. “We have had about three parcels a year each (every one got one at Christmas), with extra issues of cigarettes at different time, and when in hospital cigarettes and sweets once a week.” Writing paper, the “N.Z.E.F. Times,”’ mobile cinemas, club and Y.M.C.A. facilities, toilet requisites, etc., were also available. Electors are reminded of a political meeting to be addressed in the Masonic Hall, Masterton, tomorrow night by Mr G. H. Mackley, National Party candidate for the Masterton seat.
