GREYTOWN

HOSPITAL STAFF ENJOYABLE DANCE. (“Times-Age” Special.) There were over 500 persons at the Grey town Hospital staff dance held in the Town Hall. The Matron, Miss Higginson, assisted by the sisters and combined staffs, made every effort to make the gathering enjoyable. Mr G. F. Eagar and Mrs D. M. Jury, the joint secretaries, were congratulated on the financial success as the result of which approximately £BO will be available for the prisoners of war parcels fund. Sister Hughes and Nurse Richards were responsible for the floral decorations, which were most effective. Mr G. Workman carried out the dance hall decorations. The music was supplied by the Maori “After-Beat” Orchestra, and their vocal items were warmly applauded. Mr T. Karatiana carried out the duties of M.C. A waltzing competition was won by Mr and Mrs H. Peterson. Other competitions were won as follows: —Cake, L. Williams; dinner, Nola Lyster; mystery parcel, Noel Workman; spot valeta, Rex Playle and Rosile Jury. The euchre prizes were won as follow:—Ladies: Mrs Barney, 1; Mrs York, 2. Travelling prize: Mrs A. Nichols. Consolation, Mrs Hodder. Men: Mr J. Matthews, 1; Mr G. Lyster, 2. Travelling prize, Mr Barney. Consolation, Mr Hood.

Wet Weekend. All sports were cancelled at the weekend owing to the neavy rain. The low-lying country around Greytown was under water. The water channels in the town were flooded on Saturday night. Personal Items. Mrs D. Irvine, who has been staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Herod, Battersea, has returned to Wellington. Miss Shirley Stevens has returned to Christchurch. Mr E. G. Thomas, of Island Bay, who has been staying with Mrs R. Thomas. Moroa, has returned home. Old “Diggers” Dig for Victory. The Greytown branch of the Returned Services’ Association is busy assisting the “Dig for Victory” campaign. They have undertaken to see that the mothers and wives of men serving overseas are assisted with the digging of their gardens. An old “digger” of the last war offered his services to a widow who has seven sons in the forces. “What do I have to pay?” ■ she asked. “Nothing,” he replied, “only a cup of tea. The R.S.A. pay me.” TOWN HALL “WINGS AND THE WOMAN.” The programme tomorrow night will be headed by the outstanding drama of the air. “Wings and the Woman,” in 'which the chief roles are taken by Anna Neagle and Robert Newton.
