MADE BY SOVIET TROOPS IN DONETZ BASIN FIGHTING IN THE SMOLENSK AREA. HEAVY BUT UNSUCCESSFUL NAZI COUNTER-ATTACKS. LONDON, September 3. lii the Donetz Basin, Soviet forces have advanced another 10 to 12 miles and liberated more than 150 localities. On the Bryansk front, where the Russian advance continues, about 50 more plac’es have been recaptured. The Germans are counter-attacking in an attempt to hold up the Soviet drive towards Smolensk. They are using large numbers of tanks and aircraft, but have been unable to check the Russian advance. On all fronts yesterday the Soviet knocked out 100 German tanks and brought down 45 enemy planes.
