Victoria and South Australia now face a coal famine because stocks for essential use have been at a very low level for several weeks, it was stated in Melborne, a cablegram reports. Short shipments of New South Wales coal to Victoria may lead to an immediate drastic cut in Melborne gas supplies, a curtailment of Victorian train services, and a reduction in the output from essential war factories. Officials are now examining the practicability of sending supplies of coal interstate by rail.
