BOROUGH AFFAIRS

CARTERTON COUNCIL PLANS FOR FIRE STATION APPROVED. GRANT TO COVER EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mr D. L. Taverner (Mayor) presided at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. There were also present: Councillors E. McKenzie, H. Mortensen, C. J. DeLacey, Howard E. Jackson, W. A. Hart, L. M. Clark, W. R. Harry and O. W. Wolters. An apology for absence was received from Councillor C. E. Stevens. The treasurer reported a dr. balance in the district fund account of £163 5s 3d and a cr. balance in the gasworks account of £422 5s 4d. The Wairarapa P. and A. Society’s request that the council declare Thursday, October 28 (“People’s Day” at the show) a holiday from 10 a.m. was granted. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote notifying the Council of its intention to raise a loan for repairs to the Nurses’ Home at Masterton and other buildings damaged by the 1942 earthquake. The Council passed a resolution in favour of the work being carried out. It was resolved to support the holding of the 1944 Municipal Conference. Samples taken of the water supply were found to be satisfactory. It was stated that the Council had no option but to put in the chlorination plant. The Plunket Society’s application to hold a bulb sale in Carterton was granted. An application was received from ratepayers in Plimsol Street for a new water service and it was decided that if pipes could be procured the work would be proceeded with. Mr W. B. Allen’s resignation as a trustee was received. It was decided that a letter of appreciation be forwarded to Mr Allen in connection with his past services. The Mayor reported that by command of his Majesty the King, a call to prayer would be held on Friday at the Anglican Church. Councillors were asked to be present. The plans for the new fire station to be built in ferro concrete with a detached cottage for the caretaker, were approved. It was resolved to grant £5O to the Library Committee to cover earthquake damage.
