ST. ANDREW SOCIETY
GATHERING ON SATURDAY NIGHT. CONCERT ITEMS AND DANCE. Thanks to the efforts of the society's concert organiser, Miss Doreen Jamieson, the preliminary Scots concert presented by the Saint Andrew Society at its gathering on Saturday evening was of the usual high standard. The concert opened with a bagpipe selection by Lieutenant A. M. Mackenzie Douglas, which was very well received. There followed vocal items by Mesdames Snowsill, Heyder and Speight (trios, “Ye Banks and Braes” and “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton”), Mrs Moss (“Down the Burn, Davie” and “Bonnie Scotland”), Mr and Mrs Eadie (duets, “Love’s Old Sweet Song” and “The Dear Little Girl”), and Mr Ronald Gilbert (“Border Ballad” and “For England”). Mrs Robert Miller gave two humorous recitations, “Mrs Sootie’s Lum” and “Spring-cleaning.” Jack Ryan danced the Sean Triubhais and the Highland Fling, to pipe music provided by Lieut. Douglas. Every item of the concert deservedly earned enthusiastic applause. The pianoforte accompaniments were ably played by Mrs D. Alan Barns. The society is deeply grateful to Mrs Barns for her ready assistance.
The Society’s Pipe Band was unfortunately not available on this occasion, nor was Chief’s Piper Thos. Pickett able to be present. However, the pipe music for the dancing throughout the evening was ably provided by Lieut. Douglas, with the assistance of Pipers Peter White and Alan Jarties. Dancing was thoroughly enjoyed till midnight in the usual light-hearted manner by the large attendance of members and their guests. The various reels and other Scots danced proved, as usual, particularly popular. The supper arrangements were under the direction of Mrs John Allan. The next gathering will be on Saturday, October 2.
