PROFIT SHOWN
WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. DONATION TO PATRIOTIC FUNDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of members of the Wairarapa Racing Club was held at Featherston on Thursday night, Mr. J. W. Card (president) being in the chair. Mr. Card, in moving the adoption of the report, stated that conditions had changed since the last meeting. The people had to have some relaxation. That racing was serving this purpose was evident from the totalisator returns of meetings during the year. The club held one race meeting this year, all that was allowed under the present conditions, and showed a profit. The profit went to the Patriotic funds, after payment of taxation. The sum of £5OO had been paid into the Wairarapa Zone and there should be a further payment following the payment of taxation. There had been a slight drop in membership during the year but he hoped the present members would continue to support the club. He referred to the necessitjr of keeping up repairs and maintenance at the course as further work was bound to be necessary. Some repairs had been carried out following earthquake damage, but there was a liability of approximately £5OO, with a further £3OO for river protection. There was a further liability in that the mile start ' would have to be improved. In regard ; to complimentary tickets, Mr Card said that the club had been against the practice for some years. At the last meeting the club made one enclosure, reduced the charge for admission, and did not allow complimentary tickets. He thought that it would be in the interests of the club to continue on these lines. It was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, that Rule 5 be repealed and the following new rule be substituted: “Life members may be elected at any annual or special meeting and shall not thereafter pay any annual subscription.”
The following officers were elected unopposed: Patron, Mr. Thos. Benton; president, Mr. J. W. Card; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. A. Campbell Pearce D. C. Collins and Capt. D. H. S. Riddiford, M.C.; hon. judge, Mr. J. F. Thompson; hon. timekeeper, Mr. D. C. Collins; hon. surgeons, Lt.-Col. G. S. Sharp, Col. T. D. M. Stout and Major J. M. Coutts (Dr. Wilson Hogg was appointed a deputy); hon. treasurer, Mr. H. Lawson; auditors, Messrs. G. W. Sellar and L. H. Smart; stewards, Messrs. R. N. Barton, E. R. W. Bidwill, D. Cameron, J. G. Donald, J. T. Jameson, E. D. Martin and Percy Tilson.
It was resolved that the sum of £4OOO be allocated for stakes during the current season.
A vote of condolence was passed in silence to the relatives of the late Mr. W. J. Martin, who was a steward for 25 years, Mrs. W. J. Nix, Messrs. Arthur Viles and P. Beiliss.
