TERMINATION OF WAR
UNLIKELY BEFORE END OF 1944 IN OPINION OF GENERAL SMUTS. EUROPE WILL BE A LIABILITY FOR YEARS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) PRETORIA, August 27. “The war will continue for some time —I doubt whether it will be over before the end of 1944,” said General Smuts in
an interview. “Italy is as good as out of the war. She is in a most difficult position. The most immediate problem after the war will be the feeding of Europe and the maintenance of some semblance o£ order. The task o£ feeding Europe will be the biggest man has ever undertaken. Europe will be a liability to the rest of the world for years.”
