Gas explosions in a coal mine near Birmingham, Alabama, killed 14 men and seriously burned 18 others. An explosion took place two miles underground. While rescue workers were clearing away debris to rescue twelve injured men and recovered thirteen bodies, a second explosion occurred, killing one rescuer and burning six others.
