POUNDING OF ITALY
ALLIED PLANES BLAST ENEMY RAILWAYS ENEMY ADMITS GREAT DAMAGE. NAVY ALSO TAKING A HAND. LONDON, August 20. Allied aircraft are keeping up the pounding of the Italian mainland. The main target yesterday and last night was Foggia, which had three heavy raids. Foggia is an important railway centre. One of the biggest forces of Flying Fortresses ever to leave Africa opened the attack, which was made in two waves. The first wave of aircraft over the target encountered 50 enemy fighters of the latest German type, The Fortresses shot down 28 of them and the escorting Lightnings another six. That made 34. Of the 16 others, at least 12 were probably destroyed. The enemy did not send up any fighters to attack the second wave of Fortresses. This wave was followed by a powerful force of Liberators from the Middle East and after dark R.A.F. Wellingtons dropped on the still burning city a bomb load which included 4,000 pounders. Today's Italian communique states that very great damage was done in Foggia. Many direct hits were made on the marshalling yards at Foggia. Other railway centres in Southern Italy were also attacked yesterday and again the Italians admit great damage. The day’s operations cost the Allies 21 aircraft and the Axis lost at least 43. The Royal Navy is also taking a hand in the blitz of Southern Italy. A force of cruisers and destroyers shelled railway targets between Naples and the toe of Italy. The Lipari islands, north of Sicily, are now in Allied hands. They surrendered to the United States Navy. Though they are cf no military value to the Allies, they may have been useful observation posts for the enemy.
